I too am new ...
I was wondering, is there any kind of map or any thing to refer to ?
Any kind of reference so I know where I am or do I just go off of the minimap ? is there any kind of world-scale reference ?

and also - any kind of fast travel or being able to select where to spawn so you can meet up with friends ?

Set a hearth secret in the kin window, your friend can tell the Sherlock dude in the character creation room this secret and a staircase will appear, using this will make him spawn next to your hearth fire if it's outdoors and there's room around it.
