You're assuming you can actually find a job that is benefited by the degree you have. The notion that you need college to succeed has saturated the job market with college graduates to the point where many are working a minimum wage job or have no job at all while trying to payback a huge amount of debt.
If you want to live a good, secure life, go to a trade school. Because of all the people wanting jobs that require degrees, there's a large demand for skilled labor. Michael Rowe is a huge supporter of this and you can find plenty of speeches by him on Youtube. In one testimony, Rowe references a conversation with Tom Vilsack, secretary of agriculture, who told him, "construction on a power plant had to be halted—not for lack of funds or support. They didn’t have enough qualified welders."
College used to be for people who wanted to advance themselves in a certain study, but it's turned into a necessity that really undermines the whole point of going to college. I say go if you love science, history, or any other study, but if you're only thinking of going because you have to, or for friends, or your family is making you, then don't. You can live comfortably on $30,000 a year or even on minimum wage if you budget correctly. Or you can go to a trade school for a year or two for less than what it takes to go to a university for a semester and bump that up to a reasonable $40,000 or $60,000.
