Well, I'm a father myself, so... ;) (Have a daughter getting a license this summer... scary thought. )

My first car was a 1976 VW Rabbit. Good gas milage, cheap(er... for a 16 yo male, anyway) insurance. A year later, I got a Pontiac Firebird. It was hardly the top end of the model for that year, but it'd still do 120 mph+ (that's 180, 190 kmph for you Euros). Surprisingly, because I had been driving for more than a year, the insurance rates hardly went up until I got my first speeding ticket.

You might have been trying to be funny, but I think the OP should take this suggestion seriously.

I don't know what the statistics are in the UK, but in the US, something like 80-90% of all new drivers get in a wreck in their first year. I'm not necessarily advocating a Yugo as they are neither safe nor all that reliable, but OP should keep this in mind. I've always liked VWs for that reason. A slightly older one that runs good and has a good safety rating can be found for a lot less. Save your money as cars are never anything but a money pit. Once you have a year to year and a half of experience under you (basically, when you feel confident you're not going to wreck it), get something nicer like an Audi or BMW. It sucks wrecking a car that was just purchased and having to go through the hassle of finding a replacement. When you've paid out good money, it sucks even more.

Also: new drivers don't need anything with "performance" in it. Learn to drive safely, then learn to drive like you have a pair (just do it somewhere safe). Is there even an Audi or BMW that isn't designed with a sports driver in mind, even on the "cheap" family models?

I didn't think about this at the time but MM is so right - stats are about the same over here. My brother crashed his car and ran over a policeman an hour after passing his test :o
The car was a write off but luckily the policeman was ok. My brother got a ban

Thanks for the advice :) I think I'll stick to something safer like the Astra. In December (Just before my friends wedding) I'll buy something a bit better once I have more experience at the wheel... Dont want to be running over policemen

are you really serious?
you have just passed the driving exam and now you want to spend all your money on a car which you cannot even drive properly?
sorry i'm from germany but here you spend some time driving your parents car or in case you're very rich you get yourself a car wreck.
doesn't matter you will make some accidents anyway and it would be too bad to let your car insurance pay for that damaged high-class bmw.

passing the driving exam doesn't really mean you can drive.

You should trade one of your goats for a Pinto. Here's hoping someone rear ends you.

I am careful in not putting myself under financial difficulty when purchasing a car but your right :) I am going to a car auction this Saturday with my father and I'll get something a little bit cheaper, safer and something more convenient and easy to drive for new drivers :) But I did take 35 lessons  before I took my exam... Even so! You guys are right :) I'll get something a bit cheaper right now and when I am more experienced something more expensive.
