The most common such scheme in the real world is fiat currency because most herp-a-derp citizens are too dim to understand it enough to get mad.

One of the simplest methods employed by governments to access the wealth of their citizens is outright confiscation. That is the method employed in SoH because it's much easier to implement and understand than a fiat currency system, where you confiscate wealth through inflation. A similar effect can be gained by confiscating only a small portion of private wealth every day; enabling you to slowly bleed your people dry like fiat currency.

The control to confiscate the private wealth of your citizens is found on the Taxes page of the Governance (F12) window. The consequences are detailed there. Vive la Revolution!

I have to agree with Jackard, Mortal online was terrible. It's like the creators played Oblivion and were like "hey, let's make this online only with a horrible combat system that doesn't even allow you to kill rats decently and is full of naked griefers."

Id like to contribute Space Station 13 to this discussion , http://www.byond.com/games/Exadv1/Space ... ?tab=index , wiki for better info http://ss13.donglabs.com/index.php?title=Main_Page .
Its a multiplayer sandbox sorta game not really rpg-ie but interesting, high learning curve and all that, you better read up before you play it or youll be smakin yourself in the face with a shoe for 3 hours.
found it a couple weeks ago and i think its pretty decent.

I tried Mortal Online. It's absolute trash. I think its funny how the only screenshots the Mortal Online team gives you on their website are screenies of landscapes... LOL what garbage.

Here's a game I just found in my laptop's bookmarks, I saved it and forgot about it before it was released but it appears to be out now.

Game is apparently heavily influenced by trade. You get actual skills in trade which gets raised by trading. Combat and trade skills are seperate so it seems like you can pick your path if you prefer one over the other.

Example: Selling cooked produce to increase your cooking and eventually become a master cook merchant

Tried this one and encoutered unresolvable issue - I've singed in, downloaded the client, updated it then tried running it again (game start) and it just opens the updater for a brief moment and then nothing ^^ Found no solution to this issue, only bunch of people complaining about it. No responses from devs and no other troubleshooting found on Google. I gave up quite fast. Wasted 4 hrs :)

i love that the "trailer" is just a load of random ass space related (mostly) clips with a voice over, i spotted Gandalf in the "You shall not pass!" scene, and a man stood over some sand that looks like a turd... i'll not be playing that

Depends on the server you join, the goons servers are pretty decent and any shit/turds that happen is due to a virus released upon the workers within the station. The game is brilliant once you get over the learning curve and controls. First day I played someone knocked me out with an air tank and welded me inside a locker. Eventually he tossed the locker in space and I died.

I usually try to stay low key and get access to the No2 inside the engineers room and open a few cans around the station. People get pissed because if you don't have a air breather it knocks you out.

One of the best sandbox games besides EVE and HnH.

I played Mortal Online from Alpha through beta and left shortly after launch. The games riddled with desync issues, dupes and game breaking bugs as well as hacks. I spent alot of time playing it and overall I had my fun (much more in beta than launch) but I couldn't be bothered to go back after seeing millions of gold/cronite/tungsteel duped. Even the Moderators are corrupt as my last attempt at playing was to apply for ingame GM. After spending a day in TS with those guys teleporting around handing out horses and unsticking people, I realized they abused there GM powers to better there guilds and selves.

Salem should be up on this list soon. *crosses fingers*

Eve is interesting, very tactical though for the most part. The constructive types of people who play and love eve describe it as a "Spreadsheet simulator in space" and that's not considered to be a bad thing. The PvP is some of the more intense stuff available on the market. Takes at least 2-3 months to be able to do something usefully in it though. If you start as a noob and play with noobs, you'll feel a lot less useless though. When you play with older players, you realize just how much your character lacks. Kinda sucks really.

Eve isn't exactly a sandbox though, it's more of a player based market economy game (essentially everything used in game is created by players other than the most basic starting ships, this is where it's similar to Haven mostly). There are quite a few restrictions to how the game is set up compared to a sandbox like haven. Where you can PvP, where you can set up a starbase, etc. Another game that's very similar to eve in that regard (and free to play I've heard) is Pirates of the Burning Seas.

Haven't tried it, been heavily recommended by an Eve friend of mine though.

Edit: To whoever mentioned Auteria, it looks interesting I suppose. But it's a very dead game. 4-6 Players logged in at any one time of the day and it's been out for a year or two.
Lucky: haven is so quirky
Lucky: can be so ugly, can be so heartwarming
