Get the Lazy Newb Pack, it has some texture packs and other helpful things. http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=59026.0

Also, captainduck's tutorial vids are really good.

lazy newb pack has phoebius and dwarf therapist in it.

the problem with lazy newb is all the updates.

have to get these items seperately

Not complicated enough to suffice for a dwarf fortress room. You need more needlessly complex engineering. Maybe if you were pumping water or magma up 30 layers and then flooding/draining the room slowly but surely it would be dorfy enough.

You need falling spires above each restraint, and then put a lever linking to a support in front of a goblin. The goblin pulls it, freeing himself and causing all the spires to fall down.

its fun to make an arena.

after the little goblins arent a problem anymore you just shove them in a room with a couple rhinos and watch hilarity ensue

Use honeybadgers for extra hilarity.

I hated getting a fortress good and running just to have a slug monster show up and turn half of the world into slime just because of how liquid contamination spread, dropping my FPS from 150 to significantly less than 1.

I'm going to be honest and admit I didn't read past Teck's post so if this was answered whatevs.

Yes, Toady made the option upon starting a game to turn off spread. Also DHack allows you to remove all blood which helps save FPS. The best change recently is that he fixed the clothing bug where clothing would rot off your dwarves and they would all end up naked eventually which wasn't so bad except one of the worst causes of FPS death was that dwarves would constantly be looking for replacement clothing yet never actually going to get it nor don it, so they would always be scanning the fort for new duds only to prance into the legendary dining hall stark nekkid.

Excellent, thank you very kindly for that answer.

So because of this thread I started playing DF again, with the new fancy version (For me it is new, been using v0.28.181.40d for ages. It's v0.34.07 now)

So I start a new fortress and first thing I do is check the Unit List(u). New shiny categories, it's not a big, long single list anymore. Especially Dead/Missing. Since I don't have any dead yet, there's only a "The year is still young" there, which made me choke on my water.
Anyways, did any of you test that version yet? I've read the changelog and theres minecarts, supposedly. Any experience with them/ possible deathtraps for invaders?
