Except when the software is bugged and anyone without a HS defaults to the same string....

Brute force is defined as an attempt to gain access to a secure area via a script making random attempts at log in/password combinations. I don't recall anywhere in the definition saying that word lists can't be used as the initial attempt or during the running of the script. I believe using "known words/phrases" is called a dictionary attack.
