When it comes right down to it, I didn't give a fuck about most of his cast. Skipped most of book five to see how certain characters turned out.

Fair, many people found the fourth and fifth novels to be dreadfully boring and simply read because of their attachment to the series as a whole. I didn't though, as I find Martin makes even the mundane things very interesting because of the glimpse that they provide you into the world, the characters, their motivations, and the societies that they are in.
Also, a lot of the "boring" shit has had interesting embedded shit happen in it without it being obvious. Like
