Well when you do finally figure it out and fix it, mind putting new supergrids on the near-agenda?

Yeah, new supergrids would really be nice.

TBH, we're having a bit of an internal dispute on that issue. Jorb has lately taken the stance that he wants a strictly limited map so as to make people run into each other. I, on the other hand, wouldn't mind a perfectly unlimited map. It remains to see how it plays out. Either way, we're a bit reluctant to add new maps right now since there are some changes in the queue that may require the assistance of the map generator (and, in that case, it might be worth putting map generation off a bit so as to make the new grids have the new features).

There's also the issue of the minimap generator being in serious need of optimization. It takes several hours each day just to refresh the current maps. If it weren't for that, adding new maps is the easiest thing in the world.

Maybe you could store minimap information clientside in a cache folder, and update it only when the client ask for it: for example after a day when the client decided it expired, or align the client 's time with the server 's time so he knows when the map information could have changed.

And the data limitation I have read about earlier could be coming from the database server.

storing the minimaps clientside wouldn't help with generation of minimaps and is easily exploitable

a finite map would be very sad :(
ive been looking forward to the infinite map when it was first mentioned. this wilderness spawning seems to be a hell of a fun for a lot of people, no matter newbie or vets, but i dont feel like in wilderness, nowhere, cause there are signs of people everywhere. be it a wicker basket or a boat, a road or chopped threes, i never really feel "alone in the wild".
and its something id really love to experience. can also be with a few good friends, its about the feeling that there is "noone except me/us".

i dont think people should be forced to stick together (which it is now, i cruise around with the speedboat for like 5 min and ive seen 5 settlements...even the russians are near!!)

Well Jorb can do that when you guys add some reliable defences to the game. Until then, seeing other players is a very bad thing. I have a minor heart attack every time I hear someone fighting ants near my farm while I'm tabbed out, and these days it happens at least five times a day.

Oh, and you should really drop images for minimaps. If you send just raw coordinates it'll save bandwith and lighten the load on your CPU. The client can then generate maps using those coordinates.

To be perfectly fair, Jorb has been going back and forth on the issue.
