First thing I did was wander around into the middle of nowhere to find a place away from the road. Nestled against a ridge and started hauling trees from the grasslands to build a cabin.

This should actually read "You will die if.... someone decides they want you dead and are willing to put in the effort to make that happen."

It does not mater what you did, if anything, anyone with sufficient skills can kill you any time they like. This is a pvp game, the consequences are the only real deterrent, so if the person feels they can avoid the consequences, or they just feel that the consequences are worth it, voila, your dead.

This is just a list of what pisses one guy off (probably some other guys as well).
You don't get to set the laws for the rest of us and if you come and try to boss me around for any of those stupid rules "because it's the law" I'll tell you to bugger off.

Wild forest creatures don't spawn in the heart of civilization. If you're so close that you're getting people setting up claims in the forest then maybe you should migrate to lands where hunting is expected (the fringe)
