You make a one tile walkway between the kilns into the vault, and then build the cart inside the vault. The cart is too large to be pulled through the walkway, and cannot be pushed. You place your hearth fire inside the vault. When you log on, you can grab the cart and pull it away from the walkway, and exit. You then grab the cart, and as you walk through the walkway, it will get caught on the opening and be left behind, blocking it. To get back in, you log out and back in.

oh.. ok, that's kind of clever... still not a full proof vault though, even with the firewalls... Full-proof vaults require hearth fires, and I'm betting that it's only a matter of time before that gets patched out as well.

oh it's proof against fools, however a clever/patient thief would simply bring his pick axe, dig his way around the cart and burn his way through the fire walls, ideally while you're offline so he's got several hours to accomplish his task.

...dig? .... Who said anything about a mine? What kind of idiot puts a vault in a mine?

Anyway, firewalls are for suckers - use kilnwalls. It's a completely foolproof vault. If the entrance is claimed, they can't even wall you in - or would have to wall all the way around your claim, which they could do anyway.

I put my vault in a mine, and I don't think I'm an idiot. I also use firewalls, with kilns for the gate areas. Given the massive area my walls encompass, making them using kilns would be beyond insanity. Firewalls can be a sensible choice if done right.

I've tried my hardest to get around the only kiln wall with a cart gate that I know of, and I can't. It's a pretty sound set up in my opinion. I think it looks hideous, but it works.

Building one in a mine and using the mine's natural walls as protection seems a bit, how shall I put it.... INSUFFICIENTLY PARANOID! Same thing for firewalls. You can't be on 24/7. Someone could befriend you in order to find out what hours you're on normally, and then burn through your firewall while you're asleep, for example (It'd be easier than trying to hide and watch you for hours to find out when you're never on).

Building one with kilns is far better: It can be built completely foolproof as long as you don't wander off and leave the door open, and as long as you check the exits after pulling the carts back towards them (it's possible to have the carts too far to the side and leave just enough opening to slip in, you don't want to do that - but after you get used to it that shouldn't really happen to you), and depending on where you make it may not require that much work to make (hint: next to a clay pit)

(and I have a kiln-wall-with-cart vault, which is the one RaptorJedi has visited - I challenged him to try to get in after he was able to get un-stuck in my cabin with the hearthfire inside the door)

At some point my apple tree sapling inside the vault will get big enough that it'll have branches, and then I won't need to leave to get branches to refuel the crucibles, which will be even better.
