You should have to train them just like you would train yourself, though (either taking them hunting with you or spawning them). I know a lot of people will complain about this, but it'd be a pain to train too many of them, they'd mostly just be to stop the one man raids and the thieving nooblets (*cough*like me... :D). It would be a pretty cool system. Also since there are so few people in this game it would be nice to see some real big battles with "generals" throwing a dozen or so NPC fodder at each other before jumping into the fights to finish them off.

I haven't been hit yet but I'd imagine it'll happen sooner or later. Way I see it my town's badly placed anyway, that'll just be the reason to up and move. For ppl who don't like the raids... this world seems big enough with the amt of players to get lost in the wilderness pretty easy, to find the perfect village spot where you WON'T be found.

dont like the idea. and NPC's wouldnt have any chance against a good organized squad. and to fight against AI sucks.

No NPCs (besides creatures of course) is that makes this game so great... Having to do literally 100% of everything by hand is the essence of a truly good game.

Ramen, I'm not saying to have them work fields and stuff when I say "slave labor," I mean for guarding or backup defense.

And klaue, they're not meant to stand up to organized teams of attackers. If someone organizes and teams up its up to you to stop them. They're just meant to stop random lone griefers. You could get them up to the same skill levels (in about the same time it'd take to train yourself) but of course they'd be easy to out perform because they'd have very simple behaviors (you could probably stick them all on trees if the owner didn't specifically state a region free of clutter for them to remain in). However they would slow down coordinated assaults somewhat (people would want to kill them before pillaging the town) and they'd be insurance against random griefers while offline. Supposedly the only wall that's even worth putting up against a high level melee is a brick wall, which takes more iron than most groups can get. With such a ridiculous damage system (walls weaker than people lol) you need something to slow attacks. Of course, something that would ping your instant messenger or something whenever your stuff was being destroyed would be nice as well. And the optimal solution would be fore them to lower the damage of all attacks and the health range of all players so that palisades took an individual a good few hours to chip through without any type of siege equipment but the balance of pvp wasn't affected.

I don't raid places myself, but I think it's one of the best parts of the game. What isn't cool is griefing, killing someone and stealing their stuff is one thing, even if it's just fer lolz, trying to wreck the game for them is another.

I realize exactly what you mean, but the idea of everyone having to do EVERYTHING on their own is what makes this game great. There should be no NPC defense imo.
