It is open source just not GNU

Actually two people run the game, though Toady One actually programs the game and stuff, but ThreeToe just supports the game and stuff like that.

Don't think so. That's why the "graphic engines" are really 3rd party tools for visuals only.

Played the game a little more in the meantime - well, it's too bad that most good features are related to the engine itself.
Is there any chance that H&H will have a Z-axis and block-based building like in DF one day?

Tarn's spoken about Open source in interviews tons of times.
He is too scared that if he open sources his work then someone else is going to take the project in directions he does not want to go.
Mostly he's scared of losing his donation stream that allows him to work full time on the project

He's one of those "it's all my code in my own head" guys, he doesn't even like collaborating with other people who don't get to see his code. It seems to work for him though.

And yeah, I always saw three toe's role as motivation and someone to bounce ideas off, the game is toadies project.

There is a 2010 openGL out now but its buggy, myself im waiting for the military fix before even thinking about playing df2010, because right now equiping just DECETLY and WITHOUT bugging the dwarf up to a point he have 5 shield and 10 sword in his right arm ( just think about his armor now.... ) They are pretty useless unless you do some MEGA micromanaging.

Beside that, hosiptal are in with doctor, new material overhaul combat system overhaul too ( mecanic wise not much difference to see from player view ) bronze collossus are now well.... really magical being as they are 99% unkillable, you can nearly break everything he cant do anything anymore but yet still alive.

for anyone that has issue learning the game there a indepth guide on youtube by a user call captainduck that gives a hell of a walktought on pretty much everything including the new 2010 version of it and showing whats changed between them
My friends are those who stand beside me, My enemies are those who stand against me, Those in between are innocent
I swear to protect my friends and the innocent from my enemies
So my question is Who Are You?

The name "Battleaxe of the Twelfth bay" wasn't drawn out of a hat, you know.

My best fortress became so boring and slow I wanted to end it, so I did everything I could.I dumped a metric asston of magma into my fortress, it didn't go anywhere. I let loose the 60+ goblin faction units, they got cut down by the population. I dragged all the corpses into the dining room, nobody even minded. Jesus, fortresses are suprisingly hard to end.
