A higher cost of materials to cover a smaller amount of space may SEEM less efficient but it is not. It is quintessentially modular security that may be had with only pallisades before any kind of city wall can be erected. Modularity also affords to lend itself to a circular layout because it does not require a gridlock.

I think the major problem will be producing enough authority.

Yeah solid point about modularity, obviously if they have to knock down a wall for each group of plots they want to get to, and then another wall for each individual plot, well, that's going to be painful. Apparently that didn't help New Brodgar though, despite the raiders needing to knock down a wall for each and every plot they wanted to access from the look of that picture. Obviously that was before walls were quite as effective as they are now though. Still really curious how an outer wall would have changed the situation, I'm just not getting it. Certainly I can see how a wall around the village claim would have provided a badly needed staging area, but around the whole city?

However, you seem to have misunderstood what I was saying about the concentric circles. If you use concentric circles, you have a minimum size each time you expand. With quarters, you have the same effect, only you can choose to expand by however much you want, even just 10,000 tiles. They still need to knock down a wall to get to each expansion, it's just that you choose the size of the expansions, because they are positioned next to each other, rather than around each other.

I definitely like the idea of each plot having it's own walls and each quadrant having a wall around it. then whtn it is time to expand you make just another quadrant built off one of the outer quadrants.

Example in paint form:
squares own circles.jpg

Basically if you do circles you have to build a huge brick wall that gets bigger every time you need to expand or you can build quadrants that always require equal or less than the previous quadrant depending on if you expand off the previous quadrant or make a new square.

So

Every plot = walls
Every quadrant = walls
Cluster of 3x3 or 2x2 quadrants = walls.

Learn to use alcohol and crossroads and if you want to move large amount of stuff inside just use a wagon.
Make sure the mine is as close to the idol as possible and you should be fine. And do force all the villagers to make the village wall. That should be priority number one since food isn't an issue anymore.

P.S. You're a masochist.

Yolan, this, definitely... I am trying to find a way to ask for another plot in Sodom, even though I know it is not possible. This said, only necessary for those that will farm and or maintain cattle, else 35 x 35 is fine.

We made roads 5 wide in Ironwell and it worked well. I would not go less than 5, but find that the 8 wide in Sodom is overkill imo. I would go 6 wide next time.

Me too, dude. Me too. Maybe we should have a talk about expanding Sodom. Only question is: Who is going to build an even bigger brickwall, I am still exhausted for doing most of the work with juhu alone the first time.

You guys should look at my last post on the previous page, in particular:
20 plots per sector means plot price = 1/20 of the value of the clay and iron involved in sector wall construction, plus opportunity/labour cost for the person who actually erects them.

You're centrally located so it's easy enough to find people willing to work in exchange for the rather tasty list of goods you have access to. Just need to find a group of sodomites willing to put up the capital (to hire people to gather materials and build your wall) in exchange for a new plot in the new area :)

The currently location I am considering is a few minutes walk from the mine, which will have its own compound. This is mostly because it allows for better expansion/design freedom.

However, I'm thinking mine/metal access could be something people get in exchange for a tax on the metal they mine, that way the city finances are sustained. The city then pays in coins/bars for the non-metal produce it needs, providing for a filtering of metal into the rest of the city economy.

Regarding the economics of getting the walls up, I think its not as difficult as might be thought. Mostly because 1) we get everybody to pitch in a bit for the sake of the city (most people are happy to do this, at least until the economy gets on its feet) and 2) palisades are quite effective and cheap, and layers of walls should do quite well. We could have the innermost area brick as a bolt-hole, and otherwise leave individual plot defense up to the individual.

Hmmm, could we combine circular with quadrant modular design? I.E. Make as things expand out a bit, make quadrants of a circle, i.e. one quarter of a circle, with its own wall.

This is hastily done but...

If things got even bigger you could go into eights...

The great thing about modularity of 'districts' is when economy is up and going, and you start to work on politics/state finance/defense you have a basic political unit ready to draw upon. I.E. have a person assigned as warden of each district, who holds the keys for that district, and is responsible for wall repair etc. (in exchange for pay?)

So you want to install a single point of failure?
