Depends on which state you're talking about. Here in the US in the past, any means the State engaged in had to be delegated by the people. We see how far that went when the South wanted to secede, and the North illigitimately went to war. Or when the Bush administration illegitimately went to war with Iraq.

But we should also shrink those governments' power so the same wouldn't happen again. That would take a radical reform of the way society thinks, which means purging ideaologies such as the kind you believe in.

The State is a natural occurence, whether it be a small local village chieftain or a large centralized European Union. I prefer to have as small of a state as possible. But saying its the only thing we have is a bit far and borders state-worship.
