@Colbear:
Agreed. As I said, until in-game societies institute in-game legal systems, discussing currently non-existent legal systems is purely academic. One's morality only goes as far as oneself, and you just have to hope others are of like mind. "Might makes right"; barbarism; the wild west... call it what you want, but the devs have made clear that they're not going to step in and stop such activity, be it caused by criminals or vigilantes, so it's our responsibility to do something about these people. The only way to combat this sort of mentality is through combined arms. Of course, once the devs implement bonuses for grouping in parties, this sort of thing will become much easier (the combined arms, I mean), even though I have a feeling the devs intend such bonuses for more generic adventuring and PvP warfare.

It occurs to me that if you take an episode of Bonanza or Gunsmoke, replace everyones' guns and hats with swords and helmets, and apply copious amounts of astroturf to the ground, you'd basically have a slightly more populated TV version of Haven & Hearth in its present incarnation.

I can't believe I fell for this, TheTrav. I'm looking at a couple of other threads and it's obvious that you're just trying to troll members who joined here from somethinawful.com

Well played, I guess.

He loses the hour it took him to get theft. It's not much, but at least it's something.

So let's say you kill the right guy, for the right reason, 90% of the time. The other 10% is a misunderstanding.

90% of the time, you make a griefer lose 1 hour of work.
10% of the time, you make a legit player lose a HUGE chunk of work, basically a percentage of all the effort they put into the game, and most people have high change sliders.

I don't think that risk is worth is. You get little reward (1 hour is nothing) most of the time, and make a big fuckup (ruining a person's experience of the game) some of the time. Seems like a net loss to me.

I don't kill without multiple clues, and I don't kill if there are other options on the table, such as the thief returning me the stolen goods plus paying a fine of about 25% of the stolen goods' worth.

That all being said, I haven't actually killed anyone yet, and I'd prefer it if I never had to. I'm just stating my personal rules here

Killing from summon is currently a cowardly act, I have beef with anyone who does this, even to an alt.

I'm outside laketown right now, about to bust a wall down and sniff out some shitcan of a player to find their identity. THAT ASIDE

As for vigilanteism - Ive stopped doing it, it's bullshit - I only respond to murder and battery scents, and even then I summon to see identity, then click the peace sign. If they say its' an alt I'll take their word for it the first time, but only retards kill alts outside of their own cabin within their own claim. Simple as that.

The only time I will ever kill from summon is if I see multiple murder scents from someone I already questioned.

I ignore theft, trespass, and vandalism scents now outright unless they are within my own town.

I think that the alts are not just a result of this, but also that they are part of the problem. People have become used to tracking theft scents to alts, and so view murder not as a potentially serious over-reaction, but just as getting rid of yet another annoying alt. I really think that limiting alts would lower the over-all aggressiveness of the game, both because theives would be more careful about what they target, and also because the knowledge that that the thief is NOT an alt, but very possibly just a guy getting started who didnt quite realize what he was doing would slow the murder instinct of a lot of theft victims.
