No it's literally just half the quality.

To answer OP, I found this while digging around about trees:

Please ignore the specific numbers -- it was just a mathematical example to show what I meant by "length-wise". Is there anything else that is unclear about it?

Trees do not care about the tiles around them. They only care about the tile they stand on, which determines their speed of growth.

What exactly is the point of paving around your trees? Just so you know where to plant for future reference?

Aesthetics or as a guideline.

It allows for easy, precise, and efficient tree-planting.

In world 3, I was managing two tree farms completely filled with trees (56 trees per farm). Without the paving, it would have been too much of a fucking pain in the ass to constantly chop down and replant.

I thought I read somewhere on the wiki that a tree needs no other trees / buildings / pavement / w.e within a 5x5 radius or else it stunts? Wrong, I take it? I have a neighbor who has some trees lined up side by side in different stages, though they've also been there some time...

Anything with a hit box is what the wiki says. Pavement doesnt have a hitbox. If you can destroy it or punch it, it shouldn't be next to your sapling.

This was from world 3. Also, in world 4 it's still not impossible. Soil does not softcap crop quality. Exceeding your soil quality simply acts to slow growth down.
