We'll see how it pans out, but I expect a "newbie" will not have access to quality metal for an extremely long time...

A few weeks up to a month of play and you can start trading whatever good you have for coins. Save up your coins and you can have some metal gear.

bonus points if the two claims are owned by "Loftar" and "Jorb"

If the game is going to be considered a sandbox, everyone should at least have the chance to build their own little sand castle and not need to group together to make their own. The more people are involved, the more the ideas of what a sand castle should be will end up varrying, and the more that happens the more likely the people are going to fight about who should design and build what. It's basically the exact same thing that happened to the first few goon villages in Wurm Online; everyone had their own idea of what to do, but only a few players got to express their ideas -- usually involving where and how much dirt should be dug and placed elsewhere to terraform the landscape. This ended up making all the other players effectively peon builder units in an RTS with just as much autonomy. Then it all basically imploded because no one was enjoying it any more.

Think about it for a little longer...

Towns that have mines will make coins so they can trade them for my most excellent beer and wines. I will then keep some for my metal gear fund and trade others for Yolan's excellent Apple pies and Tarn's brilliant quality wood (wine aged in high quality barrels taste better don't you know?)

Why don't they make their own beer and wine? Well because I make better beer and wine and they have better things to do (like make metal and hunt bears).

Trades have happened before and will continue to happen, only difference is that metal is more expensive now.

WRONG!

Or maybe we're using the wrong word... how about instead of sandbox, we call it open ended, non goal driven... I think that would be closer to the dev's goal.

It also seems that people think others will completely hoard everything they make and wont trade anything lower quality than theirs.

I found some rust root. Though my stats aren't near the recommended. Considering how much I've traveled, it's not really reasonable to expect someone with my stats to find much of it, but it is at least possibly to find a small amount.

are your stats much higher than 30 per, 50 exploration?
I've searched to no avail, and could raise my exploration to 60-70, but don't know if its worth it.. and raising per seems impossible atm lol...

Carrots are the best solution at the moment.
However, I've tried to keep my stats evenly leveled. I have around 20 of each of the old skills and now if I try to take any of them much higher I'm going to have a ridiculous long haul of eating all chantells, all the time.
Surprise.

Yeah all my stats are 30-40, I was trying to keep them even, the new stats will be hard to up... and perception will take quite a while.. I'll have to make a huge carrot farm near RoB to up it since I'll have to use a noob alt to farm since I'm full industry...

I've found a second root. I bet they lowered the requirements to find them.
