I will quite agree that if you're a hermit and have a long workday and commute, some things, like steel, just aren't possible, however, that's what trade is for. If you're part of a village, the whole village should be sharing these responsibilities. For everything else? Well, timers are nice if you're trying to grind out the absolute highest quality on item X, but they're hardly necessary.
