In response to the claims that you shouldn't converse with people... I've never had a bad experience greeting random strangers. Now, greeting people who are tracking a scent of mine? Yes. Greeting people that just broke down my walls or attacked me? Yes. But even those don't amount to a large amount of the people I've met.
The thing is, I've met tons of people when just out exploring and we say hello, have a little chat, maybe exchange locations, etc. If you ignore the people then you're not exactly playing a MMO... Of course, there are a few things to remember when you greet someone... A: Move around a lot if they have a sling or bow in hand, eventually they'll put it away if they are friendly. B: If they (OR YOU!) have a weapon other than a stone axe in hand, try to get it put away. If they refuse, well, I strongly suggest getting to a boat and conducting conversations from that. C: Remember to offer them a refreshing beverage! I usually try to offer some wine and cheeses to anyone I meet, they see it as free food, and it shows that I am not entirely weak in terms of strength. If you don't have wines or cheeses to offer, then just try to offer whatever you have (or offer wine and cheeses and ask them to come back to your village so you can get it. Very rarely do they accept that, so no cheeses or wine to giveaway, no problem).
Also, people are almost always more likely to converse friendly with you if you're both on boats, as there's a tad less risk. And if all else fails and they absolutely refuse to converse with you up close, ask if they'd be fine with talking in private chat a bit so you can exchange information.
The biggest reason I seek out people is to trade information more than anything else, it's usually free, and it can be very useful.
