...there is literally no point to a player run banking system. Why would I trust anyone with my items when I can just store them on alt characters which can't be killed and which I can instantly access?

Banks require trust and security. Very few have that in game. Your idea is not bad just not very practical. One aspect o banking that could be done however is a money changer type of person. I know its frustrating to go to A&O and not have the item the trader wants for something. It would be nice to be able to exchange x amount of curios for another.
