Do you use a program or anything to determine where to put the tiles? Or do you just eyeball it

all i use is paint and paint.net
1pixel = tile
and then "show grid" and ctrl+l
i mostly turn original pic into paveable color and cut them together, i cant draw for shit

here is the original narwhale for example:

Figured, that's what I'd been doing too... Only problem is finding basic pixel art to emulate. It's hard to find ones where the pixels are large enough to actually be paved within a reasonable area size

Actually Coles you can always scale down an image. For example the rose i paved was originally like 400x150 and I scaled it down to a reasonable size but one that would still keep the detail.

Edit: images over 1000 pixels in length or width are not worth the time as many details will be lost due to shading

Thanks for explaining how you do it - and thanks Jordan for asking - I wondered how you get them so accurate. It's inspired me to try again now I have a means of, hopefully, producing something stunning like these.
