I've got to say that I find it really cool that you're creating your own servers, but I fully support Jorb on this one.

If you're going to do it, why not actually make something of your own while you're at it?

Thanks.

Technically, aren't the graphics part of the client, not the server? If it's a straight server emulator they shouldn't need to touch any graphics, it is their users who are using the graphics when they connect with their seatribe provided haven clients.

- lib/haven-res.jar
This file is not actually distributed with this source tree, but
is downloaded from Haven's web server as part of the default
target of the Ant build file. It is the file containing all the
data files with game content. In particular, it is necessary for
actually connecting to our game server and playing, and it also
contains some graphics for "bootstrapping" the client (which
could be replaced if you so wish).

Its contents are owned by us, Fredrik Tolf and Björn
Johannessen, and we reserve all rights to it.

Furthermore, the client's source code is very cleanly separated from the actual content of the game; they even reside in completely different files (the haven.jar and haven-res.jar files)!

Sadly there aren't WT archives for threads about the old clients anymore...

Sure, we have plans to redraw all graphics (at least we will try) and write new client. And on the other hand we want to make game more similar to H&H. Video just demonstrates server's abilities.

That means that no one but seatribe can distribute the graphics, but I'm not sure if it prohibits a user who has gotten the haven-res.jar legitimately from the h&h site to use the same jar file when playing on an emulated server. Probably something for the courts to decide, copyright laws are a maze.

The post DPblH just made should end all arguing - using Seatribe IP as placeholder for closed private testing should be no problem - so code work's going on and meanwhile own graphics can be made... (Daji to the rescue ?!? ;) )

it's fun to watch a video of ppl having fun creating :)

Hm, if one reimplements the server and makes the open source client point to the newly developed server. How is this illegal?

There is no creative breaking rule. Copyright law specifically allows clean room reimplementations. You can't copyright APIs or protocols, they basically exist so alternatives could be created.

As an example, Bukkit, a minecraft server reimplementation is just that.

Unless the new server is using code from the old server, a reimplementation is perfectly legal anywhere. There may be trademark issues by calling it "Haven&Hearth Private Server" but it's just as easy to call it anything else that doesn't infringe any trademark.

Speak for yourself, fgt.

I have made many sprites and tons of artwork, and I'm thrilled when I see someone use it in their works.
