Yeah, I kinda agree with this, really. Though it's scary at first and is still a significant penalty, it's nowhere near permadeath in its current state. I've found myself taking risks and thinking 'well, even if I do die, I still get to keep my stuff so it's not that bad'. Pretty much the opposite mindset I have with roguelikes (the games most famous for permadeath), where I waste tons of items just to make sure I DO NOT DIE. The LP refund isn't much of a problem, but with the value of items in this game it just means you have to grind for a bit with food and curios to get back to your former state.

Then again, just removing inheritance doesn't really solve the problem, as people can just play together and have the surviving friend give the items to the new character (with a convenient option to teleport to said friend at spawn time).

The difference between this and roguelikes, as I've encountered it, is that most Roguelikes don't immediately dump obscenely out of level enemies upon you, unless that's the point of the dungeon, or without warning you. "You sense imminent danger." or "THUMB!"

"THUMB!"

Are you kidding me? Roguelikes are worse than any other kind of game in that aspect. You're just randomly walking through the dungeon, BAM FIRE TRAP half of your inventory disintegrates! And almost all traps like that deal damage as well, so if you're low on HP (or a weak character) it regularly means an instant death. Then there's bullshit like high-level monsters being able to kill in one turn (The monster slits your throat! You die!), sometimes even before you can see them (it's happened way too often that I teleport to Chaos in Ragnarok and instantly get killed by a Hel Dragon appearing out of nowhere).

Image
(All of this happens in one turn. The first message, 'you play a tune' indicates you've used your ocarina and are teleporting to Chaos.)

That just means you can stat anew in a different part of the world away from that guy that killed you.
Scooby Doo taught us that the real monsters are humans.

VDZ, I call your teleport "THIS IS BS" and I raise it with death on first turn in Nethack. Whichis pretty similar to what happened to feedzor.

Point is, if you're going to rage and cry and quit after just 1 day of playing, then perhaps Farmville or Barbie's Beach Adventures is the game for you.
