I haven't been prospecting, nor made rustroot since near after the beginning of the world.
I actually never had problems with prospecting, with exception of it not showing (blank results) sometimes when it should. Otherwise all the directions that are pointing are always pointing towards the node, it just looks like your node is quite shapy one. The only problem here is, that it should be just pointed towards middle of the nodes, so the confusion is avoided.
I think Ranma, when he was still playing with me, was always triangulating nodes and it was fairly easy then to find it straight ahead, tho I cannot recall what kind of system he was using.
And using q20-30 RR is far best option, so it doesn't hunt nodes further away then the one you're next too.
