I'll reply for him, because most of the people using sharp tiles have common reasons.

The game gets more technical this way, we can notice when something is there, for example when we're trying to pave and we accidentally do a circle pavement (a 9x9 with a 1 tile leftover in the middle) and we wouldn't be able to identify something missing otherwise. We also tend not to suck in combat or while foraging, for example. The game is maybe less beautiful, but way clearer than it usually is with the standard tiles.

That was my thinking, the difference just wasn't astronomical.

Yes? Why not? If you can store 7k items in a barter stand that requires less materials than the equivalent of cupboards (less space too) and doesn't waste houses... Why not.
Forgot to mention: The higher Q it is, the more you can store. Q-reliant storage!
