Yeah

Anyway, I'm pretty sure that guy was Bear Grills, and his show while entertaining teaches you the worst possible survival habits.

As for drinking unprocessed water, don't you first world people ever go hiking up in the mountains? Drinking from mountain springs is perfectly safe.

We actually filter that water before drinking it. A filtration pump and iodine tablets are basic backpacking/hiking tools. You can probably get away with drinking moving water but you often get stuck having to deal with pools of still water on longer backpacking trips so you tend to make it a habit of cleaning all of your water no matter what.

Do you also use disinfectant spray on berries you pick while hiking?

Naa, you just generally bring a field guide with you to identify poisonous berries and mushrooms before eating anything. If you know what you're doing already then more power to you, but a lot of us can't immediately identify edibles on sight.

Not everyone likes to live dangerously Potjeh.

On the other side though, my father got Polio when he was 15 by drinking from still water while out sledding, he was partially paralysed (legs) for five years ........ he did go on to make a full recovery though. :)

Hopefully hafen will have more berries and less water - just to tie things back in, lol.

i did (if you consider japan 1st world, that is) when my father was alive, and he was always real picky. i dont any more as i myself am not too familiar with those spots and some others use look clean but often not actually clean according to him. i still see those ppl who go up in the mountains to collect water directly (without filtering) regularly with water tanks in the mountains occasionally. (after fukushima, however, not many want to do it any more in northern japan, i guess, and im in western part.)

Mountain springs are different from rivers that flow out of them. Springs that come out directly from the ground are perfectly safe to drink from, but it's the rivers you should be careful about, because you could catch something if there's a carcass upstream.
