I have been swimming since it has been implemented. The devs made it pretty clear back then that swimming is dangerous, so we tried to figure out what will happen if we cross one tile first. That led us to conclusions how much con it will take to cross entire rivers. Ever since then I enjoy a good swim over a boat ride when I am hunting. Never drowned or even came close to it. We would have never been able to found Wayneville in World 2 if we all had not been able to swim and measure the inherent dangers (some of us drowned anyway), because we had no boats back then...

Well I am off to a lake, have fun.

but none of this changes the fact that it is a shitty year-old mechanic

Yeah, I just got a bit nostalgic there.

I miscounted tiles since it was dark and I thought the last one was shallow. Drowned in the last tile :x

Why do people gamble with months of work anyway? Counting tiles? :|

I'm a new player too and I have read about swimming. It's just something you didn't find first before you bought it. Like someone said it's an alpha game so we are here to not only play but find issues ya? Quitting seems abrupt. You can revive right with reduced stats?

Metal, hey what other reason is there to group up with people but metal. If we can do everything alone doesn't that mean villages still win - they have more numbers to pillage you. Let me tell you something I don't see mentioned here - even when I asked about lack of metal. You can use ancestral worship to pray for nuggets. Those can be added up and used for low lvl equipment. I've been saving mine and I plan on being somewhat independent until I can setup some good trading for better items. So, no one mentioned it to me BUT it does exist to get you started so I'll mention it.

I think your graphics crack was bordering on rude - these graphics are fine for 2d.

Combat I don't do enough of to retort. I've killed about 3 creatures so far and only with a sling, close combat is too dangerous for me so far.

Taming I just recently did - twice server lag stopped me or I got messed up in the rotation and couldn't use the quell and couldn't figure out why - I had done the storm - sidestep - bee for ex. The time I did get a successful taming - it took me around 15m increments what... 4 times after the first. Basically, over one hour and after the failed attempts that totalled over an hour each themselves with no result made the reward all the greater. I appreciate what I got because it took awhile to get. If it were a 5 minute project it might mean as much to me as one patch of an onion field. Making it take a long time to me keeps it something to keep down ppl just abusing the amount of objects they create. I guess I'm saying it makes sense to have to invest time on this particular part of the game. You are creating a mostly permanent object in the game that moves unlike your log cabin for ex. The only change I might make is to not have all creatures aggro in that group. It will leave less unbuilt lines around and leave those creatures open for someone to harvest /tame instead of being engaged with another player if they can't be. I haven't tested it because I didn't take anyone with me to tame but I would imagine those things can't be done, either way I left an ugly sign mess on my attempt and didn't get a chance to clean up - in fact I left them because the area seems to spawn auroch but has few trees around so I expect maybe to reuse those and have left them for storage but technically it is just junk in someones way of running thru the area.

When I login, I'm proud of seeing that bull in my yard - sure he isn't a cow that I can get milk from but I'll get one eventually and he took me time and effort so I won't be just freeing him anytime soon until/if he becomes a strain on my trough.

As for village life, it's not enviable to me. I joined a village and was given gear, access to metals and stuff. It wasn't that fun to just be given stuff and did seem like a leech so I made my contributions where I could but I think I prefer being alone and did actually leave that village.
