I recently read Neil Strauss' "Emergency". It was a rather inspiring tale of his run-ins with eccentrics and lunatic-fringe survivalists in a three year quest to become a more independent person and learn some survival skills. If aren't too troubled by pop-cultural prose I can recommend it.

To make a successful Deadfall Trap the stone you are using must be heavy and wide enough to pin down the prey you are trying to capture. I have smashed my hands on more than one occasion trying to set one of these up.

I grow peppermint, sage, lemongrass, Marsh Mallow plant, and a few other local herbs used for tea/healing. Not survival, but I guess it's thread related.

But not quite so heavy as to crush it (unless your 'prey' is out to get you and you need it to die). Trying to clean and cook an animal that has been crushed like that leaves the meat a bit.... bleh.
