While money doesn't buy happiness, neither does playing video games. Games just create an illusion of being happy; in reality they only make you more miserable. They aren't a substitution for college.

Seeing so many people measure university by how much money it costs/gives you is disturbing. If you want a job get a job, if you want an education get an education. University, contrary to popular opinion, is not for everybody, nor should it be.

Also, ewlol, I really don't get your connection between video games and being unhappy. I play games and I'm positively chipper.

Theorically:

More time used in the college instead of working = More money when you'll go to work, paying for your specialization. Paying your time lost.

Less time used in a college mean that you're going to work pretty early (factory) = Less payment because lifetime-Specialization-Mind-Affidability isn't in your rent. You sell your handwork and handwork is something that everyone can sell, so isn't payed more than a specializer.

It's not wrong. The problem is when the distance between the money of a man after the college and the money of a worker, is too large.

Ipotetically a normal worker should have a good life.
A college man should have a good +1 life.

Pratically, the first one suck, the 2th one know how avoid the law, so the 1th one have to pay taxes for both. (this is where i live.)

Se, let's love the theory.

Unless you study the liberal arts, the original purpose for higher education, in which case they will not help you get a job. And why should it? They were never intended to increase "employability", if anything they reduce it since people that come out the other side are no longer happy with the laughable jobs that are offered to them if they don't have a "practical" degree.

The appreciation and furthering of our arts and pure sciences has fallen to the status of hobbies in the wake of Business Studies and similar bullshit made up courses.

The original purpose was pretty different and there are lots of work that one can't do without studying. School it's not just a matter of work, is the base of a society. Without culture you can't have the brain to vote, you're just a sheep and all the political system that give to us the free to choise, fall into a giant lie of fake freedom.

School is usefull for many thing, most of them aren't money or material things, but pretty usefull for material life. Anyway, about the job, specializations are totally usefull for have a job.

I don't know how american school work, how many years, wich kind of specialization and what else. I'm just pointing that the Theory is good. The reality is, of course, different, but the problem isn't the theory but the are the peoples and theyr mechanisms.

Mhh..but this topic is starting to be too much big to talk of all this things. Too much sides of the same solid, i've not the mind to go deeper. Too sleepy atm. XD

Given that you have the sufficient mental horsepower, going to college for a career that you really, really want to do in life is a good idea. And with certain careers (such as being a doctor), you can have high job security as well as a high salary. If you're willing to devote 10-15 years of your life to your higher education, then go for it. Get all the grants and scholarships that you can and take advantage of every financial opportunity. Try not to work a job while you're in school so you have time to devote yourself to hard coursework. Also, for certain things, the military will pay for all of your schooling.

It is a lot of work, and for certain things, it is EXTREMELY competitive. God forbid you make a B in a class. For certain schools that you're trying to apply for (such as med school), a B is almost like an F.

And certain careers can earn you $100,000-200,000+. Even if you have a lot of debt from your education, it is worth it as long as you enjoy what you're doing.

Oh, you also don't have to go to a prestigious college with obscene tuition. There are less prestigious but still good colleges where you'll spend less tuition, and the quality of education is still the same. People who try to go to the most prestigious/most expensive school are suckers, in my opinion.

Agree with this part. Any job is worth it if you are enjoying what you're doing.

Another tip: Always research the median salaries when going into a career/applying for a job. If an employer gives you the average value, that number will always be higher than what you will actually earn. Average is skewed by the boss's salary, etc.

That might have been true 50 years ago. Welcome to the present though, many people have already explained to you what's going on these days.

Also, define "harder". Is the work of a doctor or someone responsible for the entire staff of a company really easier than of the guy hauling bricks the entire day?

A general practitioner here makes around 100k, has to study for 8 years, has 10 minutes for each patient, while working 40-60 hours per week.
I would that say that is a very shitty life, dealing with horrible people every single day.
Unless you're his wife, you aren't going to be very happy.

Education is a huge drain hole, because in reality many get to hear they are overqualified, now delivering your mail while being left with a huge debt.
If you want to earn money I'd rather be an entrepreneur, and do what I like to do, but I suppose not everyone is as creative as I am.
Personally I don't care for this rat-race, nor am I a so called ditch digger.

For me happiness is synthetic, for pleasure can be found in many things.
But the last place you will find it is in the money you make.
