I'm not entirely sure you know what clunkiness means, orcling. Without a doubt it is becoming more and more difficult to run a game simply because you have to figure out so many unintuitive menus and know so many work arounds for problems programmed into the game. Some degree of bloat and mess is acceptable but it has never been a secret that DF is heading towards being impossible to break into without fervent research ahead of time.

I do know what you mean.
But dwarf fortress ALWAYS had a STEEP learning curve- You usually knew your way around after one or two weeks, and DF always followed the trial and error principle, LOSING IS FUN.

Sure, it's harder for new people to find their way around. (there's ALWAYS old versions avaiable, don't forget that. Noone forces you to play the new stuff) But the DF community consists mostly of veterans and people screaming for new content, same with the H&H community.
Its just that Toady One delivers and Jorb&Loftar don't.

Your capacity to skew simple subjects into offensive ones is impressive, I'll give you that.

Take your first fortress or two nice and slowly in a relatively safe location so that you can learn the controls. It's perfectly fine to lose and be destroyed but it's boring and frustrating when you can't figure out how to build a home or feed your dorfs. Starvation is very different form "Why can't I place a farm?"

If possible, ready a guide as you play or get someone to walk you through the first steps. =)

about two hours into my game, I had a nice little fort coming along, a good farm, enough booze and plenty of living space, when all of a sudden a bunch of "giant kea" show up and ruin everyone's day, most of my dorfs ended up going insane after watching the apparently large feathery beasts tear up their children :(

It happens, that's why you get so many migrants to work with. Sacrifices to the giant kea birds and other dangers of the world~!

yeah by that point i had gotten two groups of migrants most of which did little but drink all the booze, (presumably because i didn't give them anything else to do however)
