We did not want to create NPCs and quests, but instead wanted to provide players with the tools to create their own. 'Automation' is just another word for AI. It's important to have this in a simulation, otherwise the game world may start to feel barren or uninteresting. Moreover, the development team can focus more on creating 'tools' and let the playerbase build out the content.
That's basically all your game will be. Mindless AI players wandering about with little to no interaction with anyone except on that rare chance you catch someone at the keyboard. It's like offering someone a bicycle or a car. In one instance you can take the bicycle and go from Point A to Point B at a leisurely pace, enjoying the ride as you go. Then there's the car, for people who want to get from Point A to Point B as quickly as possible.
Given the fact that people who reach Point B first will eventually be the ones better off, people will reluctantly choose the quicker option as to not be left behind.
