i think the reason it failed is because what you did didn't follow any linear progression. in haven you start with nothing, you get sticks and boughs and get discovery LP, and also you have enough to make a shelter! boom, progression, right off. its not much but after that you just progress in a very understandable way. you can see how you are progressing every step of the way.
in salem you start with nothing, and have to work on skill values to get "progress" "okay, i increased (skill) a bit... what did that do?" it follows a progression that you have to be very experienced and knowledged in the game mechanics to get. when i first played i couldn't even find the progression to get a basic shelter, because it's not really there.
THAT is why salem failed
