Have a question for you:

how many people would still play if the mechanic for getting crops, wood, etc, were better (and made botting impossible) but the same ultimate goals of quality and stat grinding were the same, even if those new mechanics were boring?

Fact is, a game shouldn't be boring otherwise you won't play.
If you want to have fun with H&H you need to play a fucking lot!
Imo the game is designed for unemployed people.

I'm currently working on a game inspired by h&h, you can see it here : http://94.23.236.43:5556/
It's a baby, bear with it, though you can see main mechanics :

You can queue orders (meaning you'll be able to plan a day in a matter of minutes) - Order list tab.
Which basically means, you won't spend your whole RL day cutting trees or harvesting clay in a virtual world.
Use double click to move a character. Then, the only action yet, not completed though, is to take branches on a tree (right click)

Also you can manage multiple character on a single account : that reduce the interest of using alts farms.
Use [TAB] key to switch between characters

This way I deal with both botting and alt factories, also, someone with a few free hours a day will be able to play it and develop as fast as constant players if he is good at planning his characters actions.

Then there will be distinct servers, with PvP or not, and different world sizes and max number of players...

I'm taking advices, though I can't really work on this spare time project these days.

I disagree to some extent. You can still do a lot on haven without needing to play a lot, especially with char development, because u just need to forage or craft or buy some curios and stick them in, and log out. You can grind stats by eating, and you can cook a bunch and store and just sit one day and spend it just doing that if you wanted. (eating is really slow and boring job too). but in terms of village development, it is difficult if you don't initially spend time on it. Early world...is long ass hours and if you're working it is not easy to find the time to get yourself together in order to compete or make yourself safe. it's definitely easier than Salem, which requires you to be online for curios to pop...unless that was changed later on.
