Why overpopulate a game?

At least the reddit players will be friendly enough.
The world can't support an influx if it's a tiny one.

Think of it like this: This is the first release of an alpha game. The point of this release is Not to test server stress or large scale anything. The point is to test currently implemented mechanics, ways to improve the flow of the game, and ways to refine the necessary aspects. A lot of core features and mechanics are not up for debate or discussion. You really only need maybe a few hundred people to do this successfully. More than that and useful information is drowned out in a sea of shit and reposts, as we started to see in w3 and beyond. Fewer than that and various features likely will not be touched upon as much as they should be.

When you do mass advertising for Haven you are trying to pull in hundreds to thousands of players to do... Nothing. They won't play with you, they won't populate the world, they won't test or report game mechanics. They will create an account, play for 5 minutes, and then leave an empty wicker basket, runestone, and a hearthfire. At worst they'll make a thread about why this game needs to be single player and not include perma death mechanics, beg for a revive, and then make a rage quit post. None of this is conducive to advancing the game beyond the first stage of an alpha release.

Perfect summary of what needs to be on reddit.

Those that choose to ignore because they think they have the biggest balls, or at least take caution at it before joining, may actually be worth having come.
Opinions expressed in this statement are the authors alone and in no way reflect on the game development values of the actual developers.
