Everyone knows this, please order a cyanide capsule and take it. It would make everyone very, very, happy.

Perhaps veterans know to straight to brick walls but newbies don't start off into this game with the innate knowledge of this.

They were called newbs/noobs/newbies because they are new.
W7 - Crestfall
W8 - Silvermoon
W10 - Pueblo Comedia
W11 - Misplaced Caves
W12 - Insulated Gulch
W14 - Vallblómbyrđa
W14 - Local Area Network

Not to mention they don't have the resources, the skills to acquire them or an idol to trade for them.

If you are going to wait until you have all those things and go straight for a b/wall, then the best advice is not to build up and make it look inviting to passers by. I still stand by what I said earlier, if you are going to build four houses and start any kind of production then a palisade is better than nothing.
If a pali basher is going to bash you to see what you have, then what do you think everyone else is going to do when they see you have no protection at all?

Actually, it is very easy for newbies to obtain WG Steel. Big name traders accept easy to obtain things like toads, blueberries, Ant Emps. and Queens, hell, even Grey (who sells Steel) is accepting a q10 W. Wood-shaving for 100 Pts (a.k.a. 5 WG steel). The idol is the hardest part, but even a Q20 bow w/ a boat and a Boar can get you easy higher Q Hides and Bone saws. Convert the Bones into Bone saws, and the Hides into leather, use the saw to get higher q Boards, use the leather for a sling, and there you go, you can kill a bear with ease (from a boat, ofc). If you farm a little, then you can get higher q String (Plant F.), and higher q branches (tree farming), for a higher q bow, and then, you can kill a deer.

This can take anywhere from one day, to one week, but is rather simple to do (I've done it myself at my first base, idol up after 4 days).

And if ramones is still accepting LCs of rats, then there you go, another, even easier, way to get 100 Pts.

(Also, even q20 Seer's Tea Leaves worked wonders for me :) )

Because you thought that was my point, my quote is saying it's not possible to do or because you think that I don't know this?

Anyway, regardless, at least any newbies who read this thread will now know exactly what to do. At last, something worthwhile posting! :D

...What? You put a problem on the table, I provided a solution. Is there something wrong with what I said? Perhaps a spelling or grammatical issue that I didn't notice? :?

Putting this into perspective, a sandbox type game is very hard to play linearly at your first playthrough as you simply do not have the knowledge to playing straight to the top tier especially if you play first and read play-through guides later (does anyone actually read a game guide before playing for the first time?).

Now let's say that the newbie has learned some of the basics as well as read some of the posts that tells him to to get a brick wall. After reading on, there are two ways to proceed with this:

1. getting/making the materials themselves
Making it yourself is going to be a problem from two fronts. a) You need an exorbitant amount of clay->bricks which requires you to locate a few unclaimed clay nodes and dig it down daily to get the necessary amount of bricks to make a brickwall (450 for the four corners 75 for the gate, and 10 per diameter unit). Making steel is a trial and error process that you need to experience the process so that it won't go out (not to mention it is a bit of a pain in the ass). The upside is that no character stats/skills are needed in the process.

2. or trade for the materials
Obtaining items to trade for the materials of a brick wall. Having a village idol build is almost mandatory to prevent trading from being a logistic hassle (it's another step but you will probably make one anyways either way). The main issue is that the character's perception * exploration and/or survival (the latter is important when the player slings bears) may not be stellar thus limiting the tradables they can discover. This method is less process intensive but requires decent stats as well as a made idol.
