i'd jump in for sure tbh because ive heard somewhere at one point the sinking boat drags you down with it so its best to get the fuck off asap.of course i wouldnt survive if it were in the middle of the ocean but if it had to be a couple of km i could make it ez

some people just panic, start wiggling their arms and shitting themselves, suddenly their head is below the surface and they're drinking the sea, next thing you know they're passed out. floating is mostly about trust in being able to float. however in a dire situation like a boat sinking you need to know how to swim well too, if you waste your energy a lot for very slow swimming you're gonna probably die if you're swimming a long distance, however if you know how to swim perfectly you can swim amazing distances with the only threat being getting too cold.

Even strong swimmers can come into difficulties in the sea, I once swam out too far (showing off - ) and got caught in an undercurrent, I kept getting pulled under to the point where I just couldn't get any air in my lungs, I was drowning. Luckily I was spotted by a coastguard patrol who rescued me, when the guy jumped in I was already sinking and I actually fought against him in panic. But, here I am, so, big up to the coastguard patrols of the world. :D

Everyone fights against you in panic, don't worry. That's lifeguard training 101. The first thing you do when you approach someone drowning is restrain them because they can easily injure or drown you too. Glad you made it out of that alright. =)

Live in a country with max 55 K to the nearest beach anywhere so yes I can swim :)
Although I wouldn't care to take a chance on say our westcoast - currents.

I've heard that you're actually supposed to punch a drowning victim in the face to snap them out of the panic.

:o - Well, that part of it is a bit hazy due to the panic, but I'm pleased to say he didn't do that and still managed to get me out. :D

The way that I was trained you more or less approach them from behind and pin their arms and legs with yours and attach a flotation device. Once someone is above water and breathing they start to calm down. In a pool setting you just pin them and drag them to an exit with your one free arm. Punching might work but I have no idea.
