The mayan calendar measures advanced astrology, the suns activity, and the earths plate system. They had a far better understanding of the forces at work in the solar system than we currently do now. Through keen observation and science, despite electronic equipment, we could too.

The mayan calendar ends, and it's a fully developed calendar, in 2012.. but it does not represent the end.. It merely represents starting the cosmic cycle over again. Yes. I know, crazy talk i know..

It's like a normal yearly calendar we have now - only on a much larger scale. When the calendar ends, we dont fall off the edge of the world. The world doesnt stop. it's just a calendar. It's just a representation of seasons and the passage of time.

Now on for the very real dangers. It will not kill us all, but there will be a massive solar storm the likes we have never seen. any unprotected electronics or wiring will be destroyed. Water filtration fucked, communication all gone. At least for 3 weeks. and after that it would take up to 2 years to repair the damage everywhere.. and that's if there are NO riots, no street gangs, only if government maintains control and people don't panic..

Overall we're all fucked because most people always want a piece of the pie, and when they see it unprotected they will go feral. When they see no consequence they will bite.

Goons and wayneville are proof of that. Shows humans general pathetic behavior. They've given in to Sam Gold. Inner desire. which has tricked you into believing it's you. :)

Edit* People try to justify their behavior as "Hey its just a game" or "It's the internet" But the truth is.. these people are mental infants who do not understand the science of self.

No, Gaut, why would they need a citation? It is obvious. The Ancients knew all. Just look at a town in the middle ages. Better plumbing, better sanitation, free health care, and unicorns!
How can you challenge that?
Edit -- also better telescopes.

I suppose I shouldn't of made the comment on the server thread regarding the world ending, however, it looks like this thread will have a higher entertainment value once I have time to sit down and read it. Please do not allow this thread to reach over 10 pages by tonight; I have crops to harvest, so my forum-reading and philosophical pondering time will be greatly limited this evening.

But, the ancestors of the Mayan crossed on the Bering landbridge, man!
They came from, like, the Far Orient.
Their philosophy had none of our Graeco-Judean tunnel vision hibitations.

Yeah, dude, they totally mastered living with nature and understanding the cosmos, and the wheel, and all that stuff.
Until those damn Europeans came and screwed it all up.

Full disclosure: most of my mothers family lives on a rez just outside yosemite.

I've read that the 'end' of the Mayan calender coincides with the planets in the solar system lining up. Since they're all roughly on the same plane this is possible, but only occurs every 5,000 years or so. It's a neat event, but it won't be the end of the world.

What is going to happen is that the sun earth and the black hole in the center of our galaxy will all line up and the sun will not give us any protection from whatever might happen. The Mayans found that out and marked it as an important date... NEW YEARS!

But we dont know what or if anything will happen so apparently we will all just die. That is the whole thing.

Would that be as opposed to the outer desire? Which, contrary to the inner one, is good? :)

If you want to know the details, see the Wikipedia article on the subject. I've linked specifically to the section which contains a reference table of the start of the various b'ak'tun periods. It is the 13th of 20 b'ak'tuns that ends on 2012-12-21. The 20th ends on 4772-10-13. Chakravanti put it rather well -- it's just the Mayan Y2K.
