Other items are very worth it, he just picked the wrong items to mess around with

There can be more than 1 plate, the devs haven't thought out the system very well, but there can't be 2 of the same item on the table.

You can put a cup made out of a skull on a table... And bone chairs help with the table stats too... So yeah

Ah yeah that update. Well, i wasn't playing anymore at that time so i'll forgive myself.
Because i have the autority to forgive myself. U_U

It actually proves any character (read hermit) with a low amount of psy and determination, as well as a few mats and a high q kiln can make a decent table. The bonuses aren't low at all. Maybe the numbers are throwing you off. A table starts at 100% hunger mod and 0% fep bonus. To get the hunger mod that low took some swapping of items and the fep bonus just was added benefit of having the porcelain plate and silk items mostly.

Sure, I could have swapped out some items for gold or pearl and silver stuff, but we weren't trying to make the best table, just one good enough to have a small meal on and still get decent gains.

By the way, with that hunger mod i cleared the table 1 1/2 times before i got anywhere near over-stuffing.
