The result is the same, the solution is to make scents decay regardless of if they are in an inventory or not.

So, like that, finding a scent gives you the ability to track a perpetrator for a specific length of time (depending on stealth vs tracking?), regardless of how much you use the scent?
This would also need to have the you cant logout your char until the scents are gone system, because otherwise we would get thieves warping to their hearth at the far side of the map surrounded by a 4 thick brick wall.

I'm also all for a better tracking system then just the homing beacons we have now.

Whelp, apparently I just got ganked over the alts I was messing with, and got my own callout thread in the forums. This proves my point entirely as far as "I AM THE LAW AND THE REST OF YOU ARE PUNY MORTALS" is concerned, in my opinion. I'm not dead yet, but apparently I got knocked out/maybe had my stuff taken (to "teach me a lesson", I'm sure), and now have to run all the way back to my settlement again.

All this a) without asking for an explanation BEFORE being an arrogant jerk about things, and b) with a smug sense of superiority that I have to admit, really rankles me.

I mean, if I'd posted a thread saying, "OMG I NAMED MYSELF KHEZU AND SOME GUY WITH A SWORD AND SHIELD KILLED ME IN THIS CELLAR WAS CHILLING IN", or "HALP IM A VESPOID AND I WAS PLAYING IN A SWAMP AND SOME DUDE WITH A SWORD KILLED ME AND CARVED OFF MY WINGS", that'd be one thing. But I post "I killed some of my alts while messing around, and it's lame that rangers would fuck with my shit over that, because they'd do it to 'demonstrate their power' instead of through some sort of fair play -- because if it was over justice, or fair play, they'd ask for an EXPLANATION first.", and the next day, it happens.

THE IRONY.

makes me sad

:(

So, let's say, each goon gets 20 minutes to be on his main while all the others make alts to attack him. If he gets knocked out, he loses. If he kills them, he gets two points, if he doesn't have murder but knocks them out, he gets one per distinct character knocked out. This happens on the rob, to be funnier, so the newbies must attack first -- penalty if he jumps the gun, of, say, 5 points.

The one with the most points wins something cool -- a silk thread, some wine, a party in his honor, a runestone dedicated to his mighty prowess, etc. Sure, higher-level characters might have a better chance of things -- so we impose some restrictions: if you have over 30 combat, you must be overfed. If you have over 50, it now begins a game of "the newbie attacks to let you know who he is, and then runs around and dodges while you try to get him". Some newbies get bows/arrows first, while you can only use a sword or your bare hands (depending on skill). Or other stupid equalizers so everyone has a fair shot. Bonus points for creative insults, alts allowed to "suicide" themselves by logging out and declaring themselves dead (still worth points), etc.

Now.

I think this would be fun, funny, entertaining, AND still give newbie goons something to do (lend out swords and any newbie should be able to hit a brand new alt, right?), and be somewhere lots of goons are congregated so they can shout like retards and have a good time.

In reality, what would happen is we'd do this for like five minutes and suddenly some OVERZEALOUS RANGER DUDE will start collecting murder scents, and the next day, or even immediately, all our high-level guys will be ganked by dudes who have grudges against them, and all our newbies will be sad and confused because they wanted to play a game and now they're on IRC and everyone's going, "FFFFFfffff I lost my character" and "DAMNIT WHO KILLED ME".

I don't like that. I think players, especially powerful ones, should have some restraint.

This game badly needs provision for consensual violence (sparring) in the game mechanics. Failing that, the way to do this is to post about the event to the forums, ideally in advance, with a request to please ignore any clues. I doubt anyone tracked any of the perpetrators in the killing-alts-at-the-RoB event I witnessed a few days ago. I did see Raephire in the area, and spoke to him - but he too had apparently realized it was a bunch of folks kidding around.

That won't protect you from griefers collecting the resulting clues - and using them to murder, but the people you are concerned about are generally reasonable.
