A level 10 boar just came into our camp. I ran to shore, he started to destroy all of our boats to get to me. I managed to slowly lure him away because I was right next to the river, but if I wasn't so lucky to be by a river everyone would have had to abandon the camp or just be killed one by one by the boar. We lost one guy because he wandered out into the wilderness, and found a camp full of skeletons.

Boars are scary as fuck.

Animals being lethal is the only thing that is ever going to make players have a bit of respect for them.

How is it any fun when the wilderness isn't even challenging? It's been our stated opinion ever since world 1 that the game should have a much stronger survival aspect; especially in its early stages. Previously, the only danger one faced whatsoever was being knocked out, and that isn't actually any danger. It's still far too easy to survive, I think; it's more or less impossible to starve, for example. More or less the only way to die outside PvP used to be to be completely oblivious to the game mechanics; when one knew them, it was pretty much completely impossible to perish to the environment.

Haven is supposed to be a game, not a Lego. Also, more death would help to make ancestral worship more meaningful.

That's not to say that things in the other direction could be done as well, though (rather the opposite, so as to make the survival mechanics more fleshed out). For example, I've considered making fires and torches such that they keep wildlife away to some extent. That was never meaningful as long as the wildlife wasn't actually dangerous, though. It can also be argued that animal levels should be removed -- we've considered "freezing" the foxes to their current level 4, and boars to level 7. That way, they wouldn't deal lethal damage in one hit (making HHP more meaningful), and create a more reasonable "ramp" to PvE difficulty.

Don't be obtuse. There's no survival involved. It's a lottery. Random chance. If you dare venture through a part of the world that's not alongside a coastline, you've got a random chance of stumbling across a wild boar who may or may not end your character's life. There's not gameplay involved. No strategy.

I'm all for expanding the gameplay and making it more challenging/dangerous for new characters, but the current system doesn't offer anything other than a deterrent to continue playing the game.

This can be argued. Surely, though, the solution is not to make the animals tame again? It can, rather, be argued that your premises are flawed -- for example, one possible strategy is, quite simply, to keep along a coastline until you get armor and/or stats to keep the wildlife at bay. After all, one does not simply walk into Mordor.

Good. boars are fucking crazy irl. I may not like being brutalized in one or two shots, but I approve of the raising of the difficulty. as for bears, good. at least they got serious about being so dickish, like some of the noobish people I see bitching about it in this thread, except they are quite a lot less lethal then boars and bears. the threat of death makes hunting more exciting. see that? its a boar, dont fuck with it, lets go south, I saw a fox tha- OH FUCK ITS COMING AT US! GET TO THE SHORE!! NOOOOOOOO!!!! *whew* thanks for saving me there buddy, to bad we lost tom

I actually survived a boar attack. His first attack didn't knock me out (it was very close to) but he attacked again very shortly after that, knocking me out, and then left me alone just like they always have.

Oh certainly. They don't always kill.

Love the new animals, rofl. I was getting chased by a boar, a nearby friend raced into a boat to come and saved me. He pulled up alongside me just as I was going to run out of stamina, and get the shit beaten out of me by a boar.
