not really cave mining per se, but it's a mine inside a cave.

So wait you can build multiple layers of mines?

SWEET

Looks like a mine inside of a mine actually. Kind of curious if there's actually anything down there. If I'm assuming correctly, the world currently consists of 2 equal layers, both generated once at the world start. The top layer being the outdoor aspect, and the bottom being cave/mines. If you build a mine inside of a cave/mine, effectively dropping yourself down to layer 3, it appears completely undeveloped. Would there actually be anything down there? Any veins of mineral or ore at all? Seems unlikely, as that data would not have been generated during the initial map creation.

What would be really interesting and also really cruel, was if during the initial world generation, jorb/loftar actually generated a map for the 3rd level, and included a bunch of really rare/cool rooms or secrets or something, but the only way to find them is to know exactly where to dig down from the 2nd layer.

No, there's more than two. Building mine holes in the 2nd layer goes down to another area. We've got tin down here, and we've not found anything below q20 yet. I'm thinking perhaps each level has 10 higher "minimum quality". Would be neat. Digging down several layers with mine holes and then seeking out veins would result in a guaranteed high quality product.

But how is it generated I wonder? When you build a mine hole in a mine, does the next layer look like the screenshot? (No actual terrain generated, just the square from the minehole above) I can't imagine that there is data for thousands of quality nodes over 5+ different layers of a 25 supergrid area. The whole concept is very interesting to me, although I doubt they'll ever fully explain it.

Yeah, the mine hole "creates" that area of cave floor on the ground under it.

I'm not sure what all is down here, if anything, but the generation and saving of maps like that is easier than you think. I wouldn't be surprised at all if there were natural caves, ore veins, and forageables/water all the way down however deep it goes.
