Way too quickly and much too harsh. Perhaps a decay in the size and value of your claim could begin after a few weeks, accelerating the longer you're gone, but for it to just up and vanish should you go on even a short vacation is brutal. I believe pretty strongly that if you've put the time and energy into establishing something that Should last on its own for some time then it shouldn't just instantly crumble when you look away.
Like Potjeh said though, there is no one great idea to solve this issue as of yet, as much as we'd all like for there to be one.
