Define hardcore. I've only been around for a few months, but I've racked up a lot of time and managed to become competent in most things, I like to think. Obviously I've never run or even been in one of the 'superpower" villages, but we have managed to build 3 fully functional and protected villages so far this world with only 2 people. First one was a piss-poor location, I had more people and overestimated their willingness to work, take guidance, and mind the defenses. Second and third are, so far, going well.
I have to admit, when I was reading a lot of Burg, Avu, etc.'s comments in the interim period between W5 and W6, I just figured they were burnt out and bitter, but as I've played more and watched the world unfold, I've come to realize they were right. There's simply no incentive or reason, except for personal "moral code" (for lack of a better term), to play as anything but a raider. It's exponentially harder to play constructively then it is to simply focus your abilities on taking from others. Less work, more reward... it's really hard to blame anyone for playing that way.
I realize that "hard targets", meaning settlements without gaping flaws in their defense, are a fair bit of work to break into, but those kind of raids seem to be the vast minority. Most are more of the "dumb noob left a hole/went outside with his keys/trusted someone they shouldn't have" variety. It's one of the reasons I've focused on self-sufficiency, since even trading leaves wide open holes in your defense, and you have very few ways to determine trustworthiness or even exact revenge.
Sorry for the wall, been a lot of HnH thoughts floating in my head.

I do enjoy the challenge of surviving in a world that really wants me to die, and feel like I do fairly well for someone who's learned what tricks he knows from the forums and *gasp* Global. Of course, being a paranoid security freak in real life doesn't hurt that, either.
