Dwarf Fortress almost needs it's own thread to contain the awesomeness that it is.
As far as texture packs... define "really awesome". You can make some complete packs with what exists or if you are artistically inclined, make your own graphics that are better than anything existing. Try this wiki page or this DF forum. Me, I don't see the code anymore. I just see axedwarf, craftdwarf, farmer.

.. But the winner of this thread is permanently ol' good minecraft
I will never get tired for that building and artwork there.
Building up a whole cities, like Turku in finland ( yeah.. took 7 months of my RL life but whatever )
Anyone who wishes a good sandbox, it is always the minecraft i suggest.

It seems this type of game is coming into a genre of its own. There are a bunch of games coming out that intrigue me, unfortunately most that look good are still in development, while a few have made it to CBT. I'm looking forward to Life is Feudal and Archeage in particular as well as of course, Salem.

You can do anything, but why would you want to? Minecraft is a very basic sandbox.
