The categorical imperative is strongly influenced by christian ethics. Kant believed you should make sure that any action you do is ethically sound by checking if your action could be made into an universal law.
For instance could you make the act of stealing into an universal law? According to Kant you cant since society would break down if everyone stole all the time.
Some cynics might say the same of doing good deeds..
