The main problem is that it's impossible to tell people apart. Secondary problem is, you can't tell if somebody is messing with your steel or just refueling the crucible. I propose that it should be require to quench the fire in it before coal can be taken out, which should take some time and have a distinct animation so anyone nearby will be alerted. The way it is, he can do it under your nose and you won't suspect anything.

I accidentally stumbled upon your community the other day, while looking for a place to set up myself... I was fearful for my life.

Someone saw me and I was interrogated, being told I'd be killed if I stuck around.

I didn't ruin or steal anything, except a few dreams on the outskirts of town.

That's actually not quite true. When the coal is taken out, the crucible is "unlit", and so it stops smoking. It's true that if he's fast enough, he might be able to put the coal back in and relight it speedily enough for the smoke to be virtually continuous. But I think that would be hard.

What if he takes the iron out?

But really, the most useful thing here would be ability to see who's a village member at a glance. I don't think it's unreasonable from a realism perspective, as one can reasonably expect to recognize the faces of people that live in his village.

Yes, that would probably work, now that you mention it.

Yes, I actually do agree. In particular, I think it would be reasonable to be able to recognize kin immediately, for exactly the reason you describe. The problem is mainly in determining just how to actually display it. I, for one, don't really want to litter the game view with a lot of GUI-like stuff, since I think that would diminish the immersion. Maybe a tooltip could be acceptable. I'm not really sure.

Or maybe a small image over their head, like a gem or a star or something. Small, but noticable, that says "You know who this person is"

I agree with Potjeh; it's impossible to stop anyone from sabotaging if you don't know in beforehand what they are about to do, which you don't.
So, as he/she said, you should be able to see what they are doing as they are doing it, because after, it's too late.

Edit: Missed a word :P

Perhaps you could make them toggleable, that way you get the best of both worlds?
