Read somewhere here that someone said each world was basically the same. This is not so.

World 3 was very comparable to the world during the cold war. You had this massive build up of resources and troops for months, yet all out war never really took place. So it was pretty peaceful although, just like the cold war, tensions went up at intervals (battle of BHB?) and other 'incidents'.

Then you had World 4 which was pretty awesome imo, I didn't play a lot then, but reading the bottleneck threads was great. This was the last world I played on. It was kind of more like W2 because it was not at all like W3 (which was pretty peaceful).

The thing about Haven and Hearth is that there are so many great stories. You could write an entire book about World 3 politics, territories, incidents and the like.

edit/
Just think about it, in W3 there were even public and private markets, Constantinople up to a certain level, and then the Buyan private market.

I'd pay to read that book.

I'd have to regain access to Bottleneck forums, receive information from Absolute Domination, Sodom and Hivemind to even begin such an undertaking, and then all the saved logs and shit :P

edit

Actually I retract what I said about W2 & 4 being similar. W2 was messed up because there was basically one large faction Wayneville, which partook in organised mass murder and crime during a large part of the game. W4, was chaotic, but there was no überfaction.

Also everyone remember the extreme racism towards Russians in W2 & W3? Entire Russian villages would get massacred simply for typing in cyrillic. Russians were blamed for the lag.

Ah, Rage. What a nice and relaxed fellow. (I know that I was in the same village as those guys before anyone calls hypocrisy.).

In W4 there was actually the AD bot army. Sodom was split in two. Myself and a few others living in Kitsune, trying to stay away from all political shit. Until we got our hands on that q108 clay spot.

That was probably the peak of drama in w4 which had not much else to offer. We tried to team up with the big Korean factions to secure the spot, but ADs bots had several million more LP than us by then and the fights were rather unfair. Nontheless when AD could have actually destroyed the clayspot they left the peak tile unharmed and we could use it till the end of the world. I am still unsure why they did this...

At one point we raided a satellite of AD which was an entire city inhabited by digging bots. They were standing everywhere, digging soil, some barrels next to them to refill stamina. Got us some nice kills there*, but compared to how easy it is to set up another dozen bots it was really nothing.

Later they switched to mining bots which were even better LP.

*Kills awarded LP...lots of LP back then.

I still cling to the idea that the average experience for a player degraded due to the inability to retaliate against raiders. Removing the threat of perma death if you were willing to dump 4 hours into building a vault really started hitting the game hard as of W5. I'm sure it occurred in previous worlds as well but not to the same degree. The methodology and reasoning becoming common knowledge and practice played some part in this, I'd wager.

It is for this reason and solely this reason that I will make the claim that W3 and W4 were superior to W5 and W6. If you were raided or murdered then you could attempt to raid or murder the opponent in turn. It is simply implausible to make any sort of military movement against anyone with properly secured vaults.

going from teck's reply, i would say W3 was the best for me. the polotics and the drama that was second to none. but then again i started in W2 and didn't stay long, but in W3 i finially started really reading the forums and undestanding the game. W4 i was sickened of the new LP system and from the posts that were being done, i quit right off and went and played Wurm for the first time(i think). well world 4 came and went and world 5 was in full swing when i got the "shakes" again. like most of us H&H is a drug that's Very hard to give up, so i waited for a new world spawn, which happened, and for the first time i was able to jump on at the beginning of W6.

as for stories, there's plenty. I think my favorite vilage I was in during W3 was the HRE. that was a great bunch of guys with all kinda different kind of ethos and personalaties. and when we were all on vent it was a blast, and ya didn't mind harvesting miles of hemp and whatnot because we were all laughing the time away.

Who know what W7(if there is one) has in store for us all.

only time will tell.

I love these threads! :D

Its so interesting and you get to learn so much more about the relationships past and present (as well as having a good giggle on the way). That other one where the guy asked about the politics, that was brilliant too, i re-read it when joojoo requested it for the political map, having the background info makes it all the more fascinating.

One thing that i don't understand is why Koya is always painted like the anti-christ, lol, he's like a semi-secret underground villain but if you actually read his responses, he comes across as really straight forward and perfectly resonable, isn't he only responding to threats against him the same as all the big factions do? In this world i've lived beneath him for the whole time and apart from one incident which we sorted between us, he has never interfered or hurt me in any way at all. When he's expanded he's left me plenty of room and resourses and none of his villagers ever approach me when i'm out and about. I just don't get it. :?

Well, Sodom and AD got along pretty well for a long time. Until the BHB incident or rather what led to it. We found out that BHB seemed to be a secret AD vault and various sources confirmed that. Later on Koya and also members of the group that split up from AD and later became known as Dis admitted that BHB was indeed an AD base built to harm Sodom without anyone being able to find out about who really inhabited it, too.

Koya insisted for a very long time that AD had nothing to do with any criminal acitivities whatsoever and everytime he got called out on it or was asked to give a statement he came along with rather shady explanations. One of his famous quotes is that he had been at work and couldn't follow what had happened anymore. A second one being that AD consisted merely of farmers and not warriors.

So what he became infamous for was his way of handling public relations with such lies. I am not saying Sodom did not have a public relation department that tried to make us look our best even though we - like anyone else - made mistakes too. In hindsight there was also probably some truth to what he said, but those famous lies kinda let us believe nothing that came from AD could be anywhere near the truth. There was also quite some nonsense being made up that probably had nothing to do with what really happened. Like people telling us that Koya paid spies real money to get informations about Sodom and similar curiosities. Nontheless those initial lies, particularly those about BHB, kinda justified our mistrust.
