No need for helmet if you know how to mine safely. You can even make 3-wide tunnels with no supports pretty easy, IIRC Bitza posted a gif showing how to do it.

A tunnel 5 tiles wide is the biggest I've seen without supports. You, of course, must be incredibly cautious about where you are standing when mining out a given tile.
