PNG has been denied for too long. It is better to store images that you expect to edit or resize because it doesn't lose quality like a jpg each time it's edited. There is also the advantage of having transparency which a jpg can NEVER do, it simply doesn't store the channel.
The only problem with png is that FF and IE sometimes display different versions of the colors and that is ... guess which browsers fault... k 5 seconds are up... it was IE, like always.
Your thread could be called screw you IE for not following standards then you would win more fans instead of picking on poor wittle png. It's versatile and is the new black.
If you get something in png be happy because now you can add a caption or penis and lose little to none of the quality and that's what really matters on the net - the ability to "photoshop" it.

I do recall that png also is bigger as well. Not as big of a problem for me but it is somewhat one when my avatar's file size is too big for the very limited max file size for avatars on this forum.

jpg's only advantage is filesize, however the inherent downside to that "advantage" is loss of quality. jpg artifacts are less noticeable in things like photographs and more noticeable in line drawings, areas of flat color, and text.
