is it plugged in to the right place? look in the sound mixer, is it selected as the active recording device? note that you may need to go to a separate view for the recording levels instead of the playback levels.

When I open the mixer and talk into it the lines do not fluctuate at the sound of my voice. My microphone is integrated within my HP laptop, I'll ask my brother tomorrow to see whats wrong with it.
